Extract "China Mail" July 9, at 1068.
The steamer "Fame" left this port yesterday, having on board a six-pounder gun, Capt. Superintendent Deane, Inspector Saly, several policemen, with the object, as is alleged, of searching the neighbourhood of Mirs Bay for a piratical junk. Their search was unsuccessful, the junk having, it is understood, left the village they visited a few hours previous to the "Fame's" arrival.
We are always glad to see vigorous action on the part of the police, but had the junk been captured by the "Fame", or, what was possible, the "Fame" captured by the junk, we are sadly afraid that some question would have been raised as to this performance of Imperial duties by a Colonial tug.
